Traditionally speaking, scones are a combination of both British and Irish cooking. The reasons – scones were simple enough to whip up quickly at a moment’s notice.

There are huge differences between British scones and their American counterparts. American scones are sweet, filled with any number of sweet add-ins, and possibly even covered with sugary glaze! British scones are small, less sweet, and without any add-in flavours!

Quick Stats

Prep time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Servings: 9 scones

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 6 tbsp unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • ⅔ cup whole milk
  • One large egg

Method to Prepare

  • Firstly, preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Now, add flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar into a food processor jar. Pulse everything until combined.
  • Add butter to the dry ingredients and pulse 5 to 10 times until the butter is entirely distributed. Ensure that there are no chunks of butter.
  • Transfer this sandy mixture into a large mixing bowl.
  • Then, take a small bowl, and whisk to combine the milk and egg.
  • Save at least two tablespoons for the egg wash. Pour the remaining ingredients into the mixing bowl with the dry ingredients.
  • Give it a good stir to combine everything until you get a rough dough.
  • Transfer this rough dough to a lightly floured surface and knead about 8 to 10 times until the dough comes together.
  • Ensure that you do not knead the dough too much, or the dough will be more challenging and not rise as expected.
  • Roll the dough about 1-inch thick and cut seven circles using a cutter.
  • Place these scones onto a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Brush them with the reserved egg wash.
  • Slide the baking sheet into the oven and bake for 13 to 15 minutes until tripled in height.
  • Once they’re golden brown on the tops and bottom, take them out, and serve.
  • Enjoy!
