Quick Stats

Prep time: 30 minutes

Cooking time: 2 hours

Servings: 6 serves

Ingredients

  • 6 slices top round (see hints below)
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • regular or Dijon mustard, to taste
  • 3 slices lean bacon, cut into pieces
  • 3 garlic dill pickles, sliced
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 – 2 cups of water
  • 1 – 2 tablespoons cornstarch

Method to Prepare

  • Begin the recipe method by cutting thin slices of beef. Then, season the slices with salt and fresh ground pepper. Additionally, thinly add mustard on top of the slices.
  • Take one beef slice and add a piece of bacon, dill pickle slices, and onion slices on one end.
  • Roll the slice, tuck the ends in, to secure each roll with a skewer, wooden cocktail stick, or a string.
  • Take a large skillet and heat butter in it over medium heat.
  • Brown these rolls well on the sides. However, do not crowd rouladen in the skillet, otherwise, they will not brown nicely.
  • Once all roulades are done, add a couple of cups of hot water, gently stir the browned bits.
  • Now, place these rolls along with the accumulated juice back in the skillet.
  • Cover the pan with a lid, then bring the juice to a simmer for 1 ½ hour.
  • After that, remove the roulades. Now, add cornstarch slurry into the gravy to make it thick.
  • Season the rouladen gravy with salt and pepper as per your liking. You can also add sour cream if you want nice rich creamy gravy.
  • Get rid of the strings, wooden picks, or skewers you have used to seal the rolls.
  • Ladle the prepped gravy over the tender and juicy beef rolls and serve warm.
