Ingredients 

For the cake 

  • Cooking spray
  • One c. (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • One c. granulated sugar
  • Two large eggs
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • Two c. all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 c. Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. kosher salt
  • One c. buttermilk
  • 1 tbsp. distilled white vinegar
  • 2 tbsp. red food coloring

For the cream cheese frosting 

  • 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 c. (1 stick) butter, softened 
  • Four c. powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp. Pinch kosher salt

Method to Prepare 

  • Preheat the oven to 350° and line two round cake pans with parchment paper. Grease it with cooking spray.  
  • Now, take a large bowl and beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, with the help of a hand mixer. 
  • Then, add one egg at a time. Beat well after each addition of egg, then pour the vanilla extract. 
  • Take another large bowl and whisk flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt together. Then, add half the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. 
  • Beat until both the ingredients are just combined. 
  • Then, add buttermilk, vinegar, red food color, and beat to combine.
