Ingredients: 

  • 1 cup – Dalia
  • 1/2 cup – Moong dal
  • 1 tbsp – Ghee
  • 1 tsp – Cumin seeds
  • 1-2 – Dry boriya chilies
  • Few curry leaves
  • ¼ tsp – Hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 tbsp – Ginger paste
  • 1 – Onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of – Carrots
  • 0.25 cup – French beans
  • 1/4 cup – Green peas
  • 1 – Tomato, finely chopped

Method to Prepare: 

  • First, roast the dry dalia for about 3 minutes. 
  • Now, heat some ghee inside a medium-sized pressure cooker. 
  • Then, throw in cumin seeds, chilies, sweet curry leaves, hing (Asafoetida), ginger paste, onion, carrots, french beans, green peas, tomatoes. 
  • Now, stir in the pre-washed yellow moong dal, and dalia into the cooker.
  • Now, add red chili powder, turmeric, coriander, and cumin seed powder, salt to taste, and water to the pressure cooker. 
  • Close the cooker and pressure cook the khichadi for two whistles on high heat and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Open the lid after 5-10 minutes.
  • Serve this khichadi hot.

  • 1/2 cup – Brown rice
  • 1/2 cup – Mixed moong and moth dal
  • 1-2 – Green/red chilies, chopped
  • 1 – Clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1/2 – Ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 – Onion, chopped
  • 2 – Tomatoes, pureed (or 5tbsp tomato puree)
  • A pinch of hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 tsp – Cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp – Turmeric powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Lemon juice to taste
  • 2 tsp – Ghee

Method to Prepare: 

  • Wash the rice and dal under running water. Soak both of them in 4 cups of hot water for around 25 minutes. 
  • Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Add hing and cumin seeds. 
  • When seeds start to dance, throw in the chopped onions. Saute them for one minute. 
  • Add chopped ginger, garlic, and chilies to the onions. Saute for 5 mins.
  • Add the tomato puree and all the spices. Mix well. 
  • Sauté everything for around 2 minutes and then add soaked brown rice and dal along with the water they were soaked in. 
  • Close the cooker lid and pressure cook for two whistles.
  • Remove the cooker from the flame and let the steam escape on its own before opening the cooker.
  • Serve hot with some papad and pickle.

Ingredients: 

  • 3 tablespoons ghee or oil
  • 2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 2 small Indian bay leaf 
  • 0.5 cup chopped onions or 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon finely chopped ginger or ½ inch ginger – finely chopped
  • 2 green chili – chopped
  • 1/2 cup tomatoes
  • 0.5 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup chopped potatoes
  • 0.5 cup green peas – fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 cup moong dal (split and husked moong lentils)
  • 0.5 cup quick-cooking oats or rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 5 cups water or add as required
  • salt as required
  • 4 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves

Method to Prepare

  • Take a big pressure cooker and heat 1 ½ tablespoons of ghee. 
  • Then throw one small Indian bay leaf and one teaspoon of cumin seeds. Heat until cumin seeds crackle.
  • Add ⅓ cup chopped onions and saute them till they turn translucent.
  • Now, add in ½ teaspoon of finely chopped ginger and 1 chopped green chili. Saute them for around 10 seconds. 
  • Next, add ⅓ cup of chopped tomatoes to the cooker.
  • Saute till tomatoes soften.
  • Then add the mixed veggies and saute them for a minute. You can add veggies of your choice. 
  • Now, add rinsed moong dal and mix well. 
  • Gradually, stir in ⅓ cups of oats into the kitchen. 
  • Also, add ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder and Kashmiri red chili powder each.
  • Mix thoroughly. Lastly, add 3 cups of water and sprinkle with salt and give it a stir. 
  • Cover the cooker lid and let it cook on medium heat for around 10 minutes. 
  • When the pressure settles down on its own, open the lid and give the oats khichadi a stir.

  • one cup of tur dal
  • 1 cup chana dal

  • one small bowl of ginger garlic paste
  • small green chili chopped
  • red chili powder, as per taste

  • 1 tsp tamarind paste/pulp

  • 8 curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp jeera
  • green coriander leaves to garnish

Method to Prepare: 

  • Wash and soak the dal for 4 hrs.
  • Wash and soak the rice for 1 hr.
  • Meanwhile, slice the onion.
  • Take a medium-sized pressure cooker and heat oil over low flame. 
  • Now, add mustard seeds and jeera. Cook for a minute, till they splutter.
  • Now, add the sliced onions and sauté until they are golden brown in color.
  • Then, to give your khichadi a much-needed flavor – add tamarind paste, curry leaves, hing, turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt, and green chili.
  • Now, pour in water, rice, and dal. 
  • Close the lid of the cooker and cook it on high flame for 3 whistles.
  • Reduce the heat and cook one more time for 2 more whistles.
  • Taste the khichadi and add salt according to your taste. Close the lid and cook it on full heat for 3 whistles.
  • Garnish with green coriander leaves.
